4Lots of Fun!!Aug 02, 2010
My 9-year old nephew loves this and is always playing with it!! He finds new ways to enjoy it and new things to make each time he plays with it - which is every time he comes over!!

4Hits A Midpoint Between Lego and Lego TechnicJul 31, 2010
Bought this tub for my six-year old daughter to help illustrate some things she was learning in The New Way Things Work. Based on the illustrations I thought it had gears as the Lego Technic does, but it does not - my fault for not paying better attention. Rather than using gears and drive shafts to produce motion it is the nature of the connectors themselves - one piece can spin within another piece's connection - which allow moving models to be built. Not quite as handy for illustrating mechanical principles - such things on a real-world scale wouldn't survive the stress placed on them - but still more adaptable to this purpose than standard Legos.

My daughter has built various models shown in the instructions including the Hot Air Balloon, Big Truck, Spin Ride, and Ferris Wheel. She had little trouble figuring the pictures out, except where several pieces at once mated to other pieces, but did need help putting some pieces together because she lacked the necessary fine motor skills.

Moving away from the instruction booklet we each built our own Wind Racer from scratch - we designed and built a rolling vehicle to carry a Playmobil figure and then attached a paper towel to catch the wind produced by a large floor fan. My daughter learned a number of things from this process including which tires were better for rolling (the big, smooth ones) and the need to maximize the paper towel's surface area.

In sum, K'Nex models are less "bulky" than Lego models because of the nature of connectors vs. bricks. Also the length of many of the K'Nex pieces means fewer are required to build larger models. Note that the box does include 32 pieces that bear an uncanny resemble to Lego bricks, especially the 2x4 flat and 2x4 block pieces, and that these can be used to connect to Lego and Lego Technic pieces allowing you to build hybrid models.

5Knex value tub 400Jul 14, 2010
There are many different pieces that my son just loves. He has made so many new things. He enjoys it very much. Always better than video games. Not really happy about the packaging. All the pieces are individually packaged. Takes up so much room that when you are done it only fills 1/4 of the box. Other than that it is a great product.

4Great toy with poor descriptionJul 04, 2010
The toy itself is great in all aspects. But the most of the pieces are smaller and thinner than the regular ones (though they can be connected). There is nothing about that in the description.

4Fun products but pieces are bit too smallMay 21, 2010
I bought a set of Knex for my older daughter many years ago. Those were of ~ 250 pieces, and we had a lot of fun building trucks and other projects together.

I bought "Knex Value Tub 400 pieces "set for my younger daughter. However, I was surprised to find out most of the pieces were ~ 1/4 the size of the previous set - since she's only 5, it was not easy for her to pick up and connect the parts. both of us like the bigger sized pieces much better. If possible, please pay attention to the dimensions of the parts before buying it.

In general, you can not go wrong with Knex for a child from 4 - 8 years old. It is a good sport on a rainy day :-)
